About The Venue

Red Butte Garden sits on 100 acres on the eastern edge of the University of Utah campus, backed by the Wasatch foothills and overlooking Salt Lake City. It’s a working botanical garden with curated collections of roses, perennials, native plants, and ornamental trees — which means the backdrop changes entirely depending on where you stand and what month you’re in.

Late spring is the peak window here. By May and early June the rose gardens are fully open, the Wasatch still has snow on the upper ridgelines, and golden hour light lands on the garden from the west at an angle that does serious photographic work.

Booking Red Butte includes on-property access for an engagement session or bridal portraits before your wedding day — a genuine perk worth using. Come back in a different season, learn the light, find your favorite spots before the day itself.

About Red Butte Garden

What to expect

Red Butte has a small bridal suite and allows on-property access from 3pm — but for getting-ready coverage that matches the rest of your gallery, I recommend planning that portion at a hotel or nearby rental. You arrive at Red Butte ready, and nothing is lost.

The ceremony spot options are genuinely ample. The amphitheater, the rose garden terraces, the upper garden overlooks — each has a distinct visual character and reads differently on camera. I’m happy to walk you through the options before you commit.

Portrait locations are everywhere. The garden’s variety means I can move through three or four distinctly different backdrops in a 45-minute session — roses, native grasses, stone walls, open lawn with the Wasatch behind. It never looks repetitive.

One thing to know upfront: Red Butte operates with an approved vendor list for catering and bar service. Confirm you’re working within their preferred vendor network early in planning.

What to expect when we work here

Use it for engagement photos

01

Come back before the wedding, explore the garden without a timeline, and leave with a full engagement gallery shot at your own venue. Most couples who do this end up with their favorite portraits of the whole process.

Use it for bridals

02

A dedicated bridal session at Red Butte means unhurried portraits in your dress, in the right light, with no reception waiting. The garden at golden hour with just the two of us.

Learn the venue before the day

03

Coming beforehand means we both know the best spots, how the light moves, and exactly where we want to be on the wedding day. A scouting trip that pays off in the final gallery.
